OVERVIEW

Osun Oshogbo festival, which takes place every August in Oshogbo, Nigeria, celebrates the river goddess of fertility, Osun.

The procession tradition dictates that sacrifices be carried in a big calabash to the river goddess by the Arugba (Virgin Maiden). The Arugba is a virgin maiden who leads a procession of devotees to offer sacrifices to the sacred grove during the Osun Oshogbo festival. Down by the riverside, devotees offer sacrifices and prayers to the river goddess, and they collect water from the river during the festival. The water can be used for spiritual baths, home and office cleansing, womb healing, purification, etc.

This is a traditional tribal festival of the Yoruba people, held to honour the river goddess, Osun.
