The Artist's Statement
Living on the Edge is a visual exploration of the shifting ground beneath our feet. Over several years, I have documented communities in Nigeria and The Gambia who are navigating the immediate frontlines of environmental change. From the vanishing coastlines of Kanuma to the domestic resilience of an urban garden in Ibadan, these stories capture the intersection of
survival and loss. This project serves as a witness to environmental challenges and stands as a tribute to the dignity of human adaptation. By bridging these West African narratives with the environmental history of the Welsh Valleys, I invite the viewer to look closely at the choices we make to keep going when the landscape itself begins to feel like a stranger. We are all living on the edge of a changing world; the question is how we choose to build upon it.
Datganiad yr Artist
Mae Byw ar yr Ymylon yn archwiliad gweledol o’r tir sy’n symud o dan ein traed. Dros sawl blwyddyn, rwyf wedi dogfennu cymunedau yn Nigeria a’r Gambia sy’n llywio rhengoedd blaen newid amgylcheddol. O arfordiroedd diflannol Kanuma i wydnwch cartrefol gardd drefol yn Ibadan, mae’r straeon hyn yn cyfleu’r croestoriad rhwng goroesi a cholled. Mae’r prosiect hwn yn dyst i heriau amgylcheddol ac yn deyrnged i urddas addasiad dynol. Drwy bontio’r naratifau hyn o Gorllewin Affrica gyda hanes amgylcheddol Cymoedd Cymru, rwy’n gwahodd y gwyliwr i edrych yn fanwl ar y dewisiadau rydym yn eu gwneud i ddal ati pan fydd y dirwedd ei hun yn dechrau teimlo fel dieithryn. Rydym i gyd yn byw ar ymylon byd sy’n newid; y cwestiwn yw sut rydym yn dewis adeiladu arno.
Sow. Hoe. Grow.
In the heart of Ibadan, Mr. Seun Opadare has transformed his domestic space into a sanctuary of sustainability. Inspired by the belief that action is the greatest antidote to despair, this series documents a journey of urban food security. As climate change disrupts global supply chains, Mr. Opadare’s home garden serves as a practical, localized response, a “Sow. Hoe. Grow.” philosophy that shortens the distance between the earth and the table. These images celebrate the transformative power of a single person reclaiming their relationship with the soil.
Hau. Hofio. Tyfu.
Yng nghanol Ibadan, mae Mr Seun Opadare wedi trawsnewid ei ofod cartref yn noddfa o gynaliadwyedd. Wedi’i ysbrydoli gan y gred mai gweithredu yw’r gwrthwenwyn gorau i anobaith, mae’r gyfres hon yn dogfennu taith o ddiogelwch bwyd trefol. Wrth i newid hinsawdd darfu ar gadwyni cyflenwi byd-eang, mae gardd gartref Mr Opadare yn ymateb ymarferol, lleol—athroniaeth “Hau. Hofio. Tyfu.” sy’n byrhau’r pellter rhwng y ddaear a’r bwrdd. Mae’r delweddau hyn yn dathlu pŵer trawsnewidiol un unigolyn sy’n adennill ei berthynas â’r pridd.
Live and Let Live
Deforestation in Nigeria is an accelerating crisis, a relentless clearing of woodland for timber and space. “Live and Let Live” examines the scars left by this depletion, where forests, our planet’s primary carbon buffers, are treated as disposable resources. In Africa, these vital ecosystems are disappearing at an unstoppable rate, threatening regional climate stability and local livelihoods. This series aims to spark a conversation about the forest’s influence on our global future and the urgent need to protect what remains.
Byw a Gadael i Fyw
Mae datgoedwigo yn Nigeria yn argyfwng sy’n cyflymu; clirio tir coetir yn ddi-baid ar gyfer pren a gofod. Mae “Byw a Gadael i Fyw” yn archwilio’r creithiau a adawyd gan y disbyddiad hwn, lle mae coedwigoedd—prif glustogau carbon ein planed—yn cael eu trin fel adnoddau tafladwy. Yn Affrica, mae’r ecosystemau hanfodol hyn yn diflannu ar gyfradd ddi-stop, gan fygwth sefydlogrwydd hinsawdd rhanbarthol a bywoliaeth leol. Nod y gyfres hon yw sbarduno sgwrs am ddylanwad y goedwig ar ein dyfodol byd-eang a’r angen dybryd i amddiffyn yr hyn sy’n weddill.
Ground Without Rest
In small communities where opportunity is scarce, men turn to the earth with desperate hope. This series witnesses the physical and environmental toll of unsustainable gold mining, a landscape defined by open pits, acidic water, and soil that has lost its strength. Here, human survival sits in direct conflict with environmental preservation. The “scars” on the land are a visual record of this pressure, showing how the immediate need for income can reshape the future of the ground we depend on for life.
Tir heb Orffwys
YYmhlith cymunedau bach lle mae cyfleoedd yn brin, mae dynion yn troi at y ddaear gyda gobaith enbyd. Mae’r gyfres hon yn dyst i’r toll gorfforol ac amgylcheddol o gloddio aur anghynaliadwy; tirwedd a ddiffinnir gan byllau agored, dŵr asidig, a phridd sydd wedi colli ei gryfder. Yma, mae goroesiad dynol mewn gwrthdaro uniongyrchol â chadwraeth amgylcheddol. Mae’r “creithiau” ar y tir yn gofnod gweledol o’r pwysau hwn, gan ddangos sut y gall yr angen dybryd am incwm ail-lunio dyfodol y tir rydym yn dibynnu arno am fywyd.
